College paper help: editing is very important
One of the absolute facts about college life is that you are going to write essays. You may not write hundreds of essays but you will certainly write dozens of them by the time you finish your college studies. So if you're going to do all that writing, why not get it correct? There are all sorts of things to talk about when writing a college paper. The basics of course are the choice of topic, the research and the writing. But the one missing factor is that of editing, a very important topic.
There are three main areas when it comes to editing your college paper.
- answering the question
- the structure or format
- the little things, the fiddly things
It's very easy to fail when it comes to editing because of the simple fact that you are too close to the action. You, the student, have written the essay. It has occupied your thinking now for days, even weeks. You've done all the preparation, all the planning and all the writing and whatever mistakes you have made you can't see because you're too close. This is where you need some help in becoming a first class editor.
Answer the question. When it comes to editing your essay, head of the topic or the question to be answered all your thesis statement on a small card. Keep that card in front of you. Learn the contents of that card. Know them by heart. Then start to reread your essay and edited according to the contents of that card.
Then there is the structure or format of your essay. The usual requirement is introduction, first fact paragraph, second fact paragraph and then the conclusion. But your tutor will explain the formula required. So when it comes to the editing of your essay, double the check on whether or not you have adhered to the formula. The best written essay in the world which doesn't keep to the required formula will not get the top mark.
Finally there are the little or fiddly things such as spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and syntax mistakes. How do you find these? One good way is to read aloud your essay. Reading it silently and because you have been so close to it for so long, can mean that simple mistakes slip through. Yes, you can use various software programs available to find spelling and grammatical errors but reading it aloud will also highlight where you may have gone wrong.
