Academic Essay Topics: Searching for interesting Subjects

Some of the most creative thinkers in the world devote hours of their time to creative and unconventional pursuits. You may nto be inclined to do the same but in your quest for a topic that sparks a reader’s interest, you would do well to exercise both your intellect and your imagination. Here’s how:

  1. Pay attention to your world
  2. Scientists have discovered amazing new things in the last 24 hours. This will be true no matter when you read this article simply because scientists are constantly making discoveries. Countries are also waging war, citizens are earning peace, languages are dying out and deserts are being irrigated. In the midst of all these fascinating occurrences lies the potential for countless essays of the highest quality. Make sure that you are always well informed so that inspiration does not pass you by.

  3. Do the unexpected
  4. Depending on the intended recipient of your essay you may have the leeway to explore unconventional topics that are not frequently dealt with in academia. Take some time to think about this. If you cannot come up with a topic easily, use a random word generator and keep looking at the combinations of words it produces until you come across some that inspire you. This is not to say that you should write about ‘xenophobic trees’ and then blame the generator. Let the associations spark in your brain and coax your inborn creativity out to produce a novel yet practical result.

  5. Reinvent the wheel
  6. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery perhaps reinvention can convey the highest level of respect. There must be an essay that moved you deeply at some point that could be used as a basis for your next piece of work. This is not an invitation to plagiarize, but an assurance that you can address a subject that has already been dealt with effectively. Maybe that previous work could be complemented by an application of its major themes to a new cultural context.

These three methods can go a long way toward the creation of a topic that informs a reader without boring him or her. As an extra tip, if you come up with several interesting ideas and cannot choose on your own, create a survey and allow others in your field to anonymously choose the topic that piqued their interest the most.
