Common Mistakes to avoid when writing an Essay

After coming so far through your academic career, you are now faced with the task of writing your final paper. The dissertation or thesis is the culmination of your academic research and is a very important paper. With so much riding on the paper, the last thing you want to do is make one of the common mistakes that befall many students who are working on their dissertation essays.

Don't let your paper contain careless errors

There is really no excuse to have careless errors in your thesis paper. You have years to work on this paper and it is one of the most important papers you will ever write. Few things will detract from your work more than careless mistakes. Typos, missing words, simple misspellings, and bad grammar are the main things you need to be checking for with every page of your dissertation that you write.

Steers clear of vague generalizations

If your paper is full of generalizations and cliche's it will be weak. Avoid phrases like 'learned the importance of hard work' or 'people need to do more.' Your paper will be strong if you include specifics instead of generalizations. It is also important to avoid vague and weak words which add little to the quality and substance of your paper. Words like always, never, often, many, very, a lot, few, and so on and so forth are not usually viewed as being academically strong. A paper with a lot of these sorts of words and phrases will not do well and will not receive high marks.

Avoid sensitive topics

While you may have the freedom to choose your topics for your dissertation, there are some topics that are best to be avoided. When topics are considered to be 'hot topics' or are ones that could cause major debates are best to be avoided. The reason for this is because these sorts of topics generate strong emotions in people and can lead to arguments rather than logical debates. Typically topics that are best to avoid are ones that involve politics or religion- unless that is the focus of your major- and even then you need to be careful about your specific focus. You want to make your arguments logically and not solely based on emotional response.

With these simple tips in mind, you can be successful in your dissertation paper and write the most important paper in your academic career. There is a lot of work that goes into the dissertation, but these tips can make it easier and less stressful for you in the long run.
