Counseling And Dealing With Addictions

Use of counseling aids people to deal with various problematic situations including addictions. The process of fighting off an addiction is not entirely dependent on the victim and family support but is very much tied to the counselor. Counseling has proved to be helpful in aiding people to deal with various problematic situations. The counselor, therefore, plays a great role in the victim’s change of behavior.

During the treatment of an addiction, the aims of the counseling process are to enable the individual to learn how to recognize and pursue better solutions. These solutions have to be realistic or satisfying to the problems. Most cases of addictions are related to chemical addictions; however there are increasingly more cases that are related to various other forms of addictions, for example, pornography addiction. In the aim of offering accurate and sustainable help, it is important that the counselor identifies the victim’s form of dependence correctly.

It is also crucial that the counselor develops a structure during the session that will include offering the client all the feedback that touches on his/her recovery progress. The counselor should strike a healthy balance between the provision of direction and allowing the client to self-direct himself or herself. A counselor should also be aware of the possibility of his/her personal issues being triggered by the patient’s problems. Therefore, he/she should consciously refrain from basing responses in the context of his/her personal issues.

The outcome of any meeting held by the client and the counselor also largely depends on how comfortable the client is with a counselor. A comfortable client entrusts and shares intensely private feelings with a counselor. This relation is crucial in finding solutions. The counselor establishes a supportive, warm or therapeutic relationship with the individual seeking help. Based on the relationship's strength, the counselor can assist the client in exploring problem areas, setting goals and adopting a new behavior. Thereby, enabling them to build and maintain a more meaningful and productive way of life.

In conclusion, in order for the counselor to identify the client’s underlying problem and offer appropriate solutions, the counselor should foster a supportive atmosphere and practice good communication skills. The addiction patient, on the other hand, should be ready to adopt and maintain the new behavior in aim of defeating the addiction.
